This walk follows the 'Running Creek', shows off some beautiful waterfalls, and includes a long steep uphill section on the way home for a great variety of both bushland and walking.
Park at the Masons Falls visitors centre, and walk down the road to the Masons Falls Picnic area. From here, follow the signs to the Masons Falls viewing area. From the viewing platform, take the path behind you (up the hill), which is a continuation of the track you walked in on.
This track eventually meets the Running Creek after a steep downhill section. For a few KM, the path follows the creek with nice rest areas at Ferny Nook, Hazel Glade and The Tryst. Finally, the track hooks to the left and climbs the steep hill again for about two kilometres before it reaches Mount Sugarloaf Road. Cross the road and take the track to the left to head back to the visitors centre (the track roughly follows the road). If you are feeling good and have time to spare, instead of going left turn right at Mount Sugarloaf Rd to walk to the top of Mount Sugarloaf, giving vistas out over the valley towards the city.
While not technically challenging, this walk gives you very steep sections uphill and downhill - the last stretch from the creek up to Mt Sugarloaf Rd climbs about 250 metres over about 1.5km of track, which can be quite a steep gradient for an unfit walker.
Entry to the National Park is free, and there are no track fees.
There is no camping in this section of the Kinglake national Park. At the *Masons Falls Picnic Area* are BBQ's (free to use), and there is a visitors centre at the park entrance with basic maps, brochures and other information.
No running water is available in this area.
