Great Ocean Walk

Summary

The Great Ocean Walk, on Victoria's spectacular west coast, stretches 100 kms from the idyllic resort town of Apollo Bay to Glenample. The walk passes through the beautiful National Parks and overlooks the Marine National Park and Sanctuary.

Description

This trail roughly follows the Great Ocean Road on Victoria's west coast. See the website for more details.

The Great Ocean Walk stretches from Apollo Bay to Glenample Homestead, 12.5 kilometres out of Port Campbell, hugging the coastline off the Great Ocean Road. It passes through the Great Otway National Park and the Port Campbell National Park. It overlooks the Twelve Apostles Marine National Park and Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary.

Getting There

From Melbourne, travel south-west to Apollo Bay via Geelong. You can either travel via the Great Ocean Rd (via Torquay, 183km) or inland via Colac.

As we are requested to walk East to West, it may be a good idea to leave your car at the finishing point (Glenample Homestead, just near the Twelve Apostles) and shuttle back to Apollo Bay.

Bus services are available via V/LINE from Geelong, where there are connecting train services to Melbourne.

Fees & Charges

A hike-in camping permit must be obtained before you can use the sites, and processing time is approx 2 weeks. You are only permitted to place one tent (of a 2-3 man size) on each camp-site.

The fee is $20 per camp-site per night, plus a $5 fee per booking (eg one campsite for one night is $25, one campsite for all 7 nights is $145)

Group campsites are available, see the website for further details.

Facilities

The nightly GOW campsites each have pit toilets (with two exceptions - however both of these sites are nearby car-based camping sites which have pit toilets that can be used).

Tank water is usually available, however it will need to be treated or boiled before it can be used for drinking or cooking. This water is not always available, especially in hotter weather, so it is advisable to carry enough water for your trip.

Precautions & Warnings

Portions of the GOW are along the beach, and can only be walked at low tide. Many of these are avoidable by selecting inland routes instead, however it is advisable to carry a tide calendar so that you can try to do as much beach walking as possible.

Always remember to read our Safety & Precautions before using any of the information on this website. Hiking can be a dangerous activity and appropriate preparation and planning is required. We're not responsible if you get hurt!
