Andrew Hill Circuit

Summary

A half-day circuit walk over the tallest hill in the Kinglake National Park, taking in a wide range of vegetation.

Description

Starting at The Gums camping area, the route takes you South over Andrew Hill via the Andrew Hill Track, (elevation 640m, a climb of approx 300m), then back via Mountain Creek Track and Stringybark track.

If you have an extra 30 minutes, you can return via the Island Creek Track, a small walking track that runs from the picnic ground at the intersection of Stringybark Track & Glenburn Rd to The Gums camping area. Alternatively, return via Glenburn Rd.

Getting There

From Melbourne, travel North to Yarra Glen. From Yarra Glen, follow the Melba Highway North. Once you pass the Healesville-Kinglake rd (a cross-road near the top of a hill) continue on the Melba Hwy for approx 7.4km, and turn left into West Bridge Rd. Follow this for approx 1.6km, and it turns into Glenburn Rd after you do a very tight left-hand turn. After another 2.7km you will come to "The Gums Camping Area" on the right.

The walking trail starts on the opposite side of Glenburn Rd, beyond a 'Parks Victoria' gate.

Fees & Charges

There are no track fees in the Kinglake National Park, however if you wish to camp at The Gums Camping Area a fee of $13 per camp-site per night is payable and bookings are required. See links below for booking details.

Facilities

At The Gums Camping area is tank water (which you will need to boil as it comes directly from the creek) and pit toilets.

Campsites are available, but must be booked in advance via the ranger or Parks Victoria (fees apply, see above).

A nice creek runs beside the campsite, which is a nice spot to cool down in summer.

Other Activities

Kinglake National Park is a great place for not only hiking, but also mountain biking (only on certain tracks), bird watching, and for spending quality family time.

Accomodation

You can camp at The Gums Camping area where there are limited camp-sites. Bookings are required and fees apply (see above).

Flora & Fauna

This circuit walk includes thick creekside vegetation, tall gum trees, and on the south side of Andrews hill some somewhat European plants. For the most part, this is typical Kinglake: relatively tall tress on both sides of the track with an occasional clearing, with a little ground vegetation such as bracken and the occasional tree fern.
